5 Steps to Prevent Deck Stain Peeling

WEATHER THE WOOD DECK

Relax and let Mother Nature do some work for you. Letting your wood weather, dries it out and breaks down the surface fiber, allowing the wood to become more absorbent. This promotes greater stain adhesion to the wood. I’d recommend weathering your wood for three to six months, depending on the climate conditions and the condition of the wood. It may take a little patience on your part, but it will make your deck stain last longer.

DECK-CLEANER AND DECK-BRIGHTENER

Cleaning the deck does more than just making it look nice. The cleaning process opens the pores of the wood, making the wood more absorbent. Brighteners enhance this process by removing tannin stains and neutralizing the surface of the wood. This is a key step to preventing peeling.

APPLY THE RIGHT AMOUNT OF STAIN

More is never better. In fact, using more stain than necessary causes the stain to form a film. This decreases the breathability of the wood and prevents long-term adhesion, which leads to peeling problems.

DON’T APPLY IN DIRECT SUNLIGHT

Apply the stain when your deck is shaded or when temperatures are cooler. If the weather is too warm, the stain will dry too quickly and won’t have time to penetrate the wood, which will lead to peeling.

APPLY WITH A BRUSH

A brush will help to break down the surface tension of the wood, allowing the stain to penetrate deeper and adhere more thoroughly. Apply the stain with a brush from the start or use a brush to work the stain into the wood after spraying or rolling your deck.
